Indigenous Mental Health Review

The Australian Government Department of Health, Disability and Ageing engaged Ninti One, in partnership with First Nations Co., to lead a national review of First Nations mental health, suicide prevention and Integrated Team Care services.

The review examined how funding and service delivery can better support the National Agreement on Closing the Gap, with a focus on strengthening the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community controlled sector.

Led through a First Nations owned and governed approach, the review centred community voices and priorities. Ninti One and First Nations Co. undertook extensive engagement, including 22 community yarning sessions with 272 participants, 67 in depth interviews with stakeholders, and 44 focus groups with staff from 83 service providers. Co-design workshops were also delivered across all states and territories, bringing together Aboriginal community controlled organisations, Primary Health Networks, peak bodies and government partners.

The review generated a strong evidence base on how services are experienced, funded and delivered across Australia. It identified opportunities to better align investment with community needs, strengthen service capability, and improve coordination across the system.

The final report, published in May 2024, delivered clear, evidence based recommendations to support a transition toward Indigenous led funding and commissioning models, and to strengthen relationships between communities, service providers and government.
