National Best Practice Unit Tackling Indigenous Smoking (NBPU TIS)

Ninti One manages the National Best Practice Unit (NBPU) for the Tackling Indigenous Smoking (TIS) program, a national initiative focused on reducing smoking as the leading preventable cause of ill health for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.

Commissioned by the Australian Government Department of Health, the NBPU plays a central role in strengthening the quality, consistency and impact of Tackling Indigenous Smoking activities across the country. Working alongside funded organisations, Ninti One supports the delivery of evidence-informed, culturally responsive approaches that are grounded in community and designed for long-term change.

Through a national support model, the NBPU enables services to plan with purpose, deliver with confidence and demonstrate impact. This includes:

  • translating evidence into practical, on-the-ground action
  • supporting the development and refinement of Action Plans aligned to local priorities
  • establishing meaningful performance indicators and strengthening monitoring and evaluation
  • building workforce capability through targeted training and peer learning opportunities
  • connecting services through national networks that encourage shared learning and innovation

The NBPU is delivered in partnership with the Health Research Institute at the University of Canberra and the Australian Indigenous HealthInfoNet at Edith Cowan University, bringing together leading expertise in research, knowledge translation and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander health.

This collaborative approach ensures organisations are supported to deliver high-quality, culturally safe initiatives that contribute to reducing smoking prevalence and improving health outcomes for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities.
