Justice Reinvestment

First Nations peoples remain over-represented at every point in the criminal justice system in Australia.

In line with First Nations justice being a priority under the National Agreement on Closing the Gap, the Australian Government Attorney-General's Department (AGD) engaged Ninti One as a Justice Reinvestment Partner with the aim of building capability and readiness among First Nations communities for justice reinvestment.

This reinvestment would allow each community to self-determine the best methods of preventing and reducing contact with the criminal justice system, shifting decision-making power into the hands of community leaders.

Ninti One led the capability-building of 20 communities, providing over 280 training workshops and 50 educational resources, facilitating collaborative relationships between community leaders, service providers and relevant organisations that allowed them to begin planning justice reinvestment activities. This included developing implementation plans, progress reports and a final project report, evaluating the effectiveness of this approach.
