National Best Practice Unit for Tackling Indigenous Smoking

Providing tailored support to organisations funded under the national Tackling Indigenous Smoking programme.

ClientAustralian Government Department of Health

The national Tackling Indigenous Smoking programme aims to reduce smoking as the most preventable cause of ill health for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. With our expertise in collaborative partnerships and ability to reach specific demographics across Australia, the Department of Health commissioned us to establish and lead a consortium of stakeholders to provide organisations funded under the programme with tailored support, such as:

  • accessing evidence-based research, information and resources on tobacco control
  • developing Action Plans
  • developing performance indicators and monitoring impact
  • accessing relevant training and networking opportunities (such as brief intervention training, smoking cessation workshops)

Partners involved in the project: the Health Research Institute at the University of Canberra, the Australian Indigenous HealthInfonet based at Edith Cowan University, and the Smoking Research Unit at the University of Sydney.
