Strong communities, strong teams and care that comes from the heart
A recent visit to two remote aged care centres in Central Desert Regional Council communities highlighted the wonderful work of local staff who bring experience, cultural knowledge and a genuine commitment to caring for older people. It was encouraging to see experienced staff mentoring new team members, helping to build a strong local workforce for the future.
Leadership support was another positive highlight. Senior managers joined staff for training and discussions, showing a shared commitment to learning and working through the aged care reforms together. Making time for full-day training in remote communities demonstrated how much the organisation values the staffs ongoing training.
What really stood out was the way staff spoke about respecting older people's choices, dignity, independence, culture and family connections. The Aged Care Statement of Rights was not just something written in a document – it was being put into practice every day.
These visits were a wonderful reminder that strong aged care starts with strong local people. When staff feel valued, supported and connected to their communities, they can continue providing the culturally safe, respectful and person-centred care that older people deserve.
Despite the challenges of delivering aged care in remote Australia, there is much to celebrate and learn from these dedicated teams.
Thank you to the staff at Central Desert Regional Council for inviting us to provide aged care reform training into your communities.
