Quit B Fit TIS teams from North East, North West and Dubbo came together at the Koori Knockout in Tamworth, one of the largest Aboriginal sporting events in NSW, engaging with communities from across the state.
Across the four-day event, the team delivered large-scale, culturally appropriate health promotion focused on being smoke and vape free. With a strong and highly visible presence throughout the carnival, staff consistently engaged with community members through yarning, education, and interactive activities, reinforcing the importance of staying smoke and vape free.
A major highlight was the response to the smoke-free and vape-free homes and cars pledge initiative, with 954 pledges collected across the weekend. This reflects a significant level of community commitment to creating safer, smoke and vape free environments for their families.
Quit B Fit also distributed a large volume of branded merchandise and resources, which played a key role in attracting community members to the stall, increasing dwell time, and supporting ongoing conversations around being smoke and vape free. These items helped keep health messages visible across the event and reinforced engagement beyond initial interactions.
The team maintained strong engagement throughout the weekend, with community members participating in conversations, surveys, and education around the harms of smoking, vaping, second-hand and third-hand smoke exposure.
Staff also supported individuals seeking to quit smoking or vaping by referring them to appropriate services such as Quitline and local Aboriginal Medical Services, ensuring access to culturally safe supportive pathways.
The Koori Knockout provided a strong platform for high-exposure, high-engagement delivery, with a combined effort from the North East, North West and Dubbo QuitBFit Tackling Indigenous Smoking teams resulting in clear, measurable outcomes in promoting smoke and vape free events.
