Two Way Governance: Presentation 18

If the Chairperson is standing for

election at this AGM, he or she has to

stand down from chairing the meeting.

The person who takes over running the

meeting is the

Returning Officer

– the

person who counts the votes.

Depending on the rules, the

Chairperson then asks for people to

nominate (put their names forward) to

be Board members.

Once the members are elected, the

Returning Officer asks for nominations

for Executive – Chairperson, Deputy

Chair, Secretary, and Treasurer.

If the Public Officer is an elected

member, there needs to be a

nomination for this position too.

In some organisations this happens every two years; in others half

the Board gets elected every year.

If there is only one nomination for each position, the Returning Officer can declare (make a

statement) that the Executive has been elected.
