Connecting with SWAMS and KAMS

Broome Trip

On Tuesday 19th August, NBPU TIS (WA ) Program Officer Oniké Williams joined day one of the annual 2025 Kimberley TIS Workshop on Yawuru Country Broome. The workshop was facilitated by KAMS and was attended by teams from Broome (IREG 501), West Kimberley (IREG 508) and East Kimberley (IREG 504).

The weather was a fine 29 degrees as all three IREGs met together to workshop their activities for the next 12 months. Everyone was engaged and eager to learn, running through different team building activities to demonstrate how working together achieves goals easier. Oniké presented an NBPU TIS and tobacco control new update while the Lung Foundation dialled in from Brisbane to share an update to their culturally sensitive, vaping resources for young people.

Following a healthy lunch break, the teams were given the opportunity to share their successes and challenges or other service updates from the past year.

The day finished off by getting the teams to workshop ways to improve the main TIS activities they deliver to their regions. Oniké presented on the importance of monitoring and evaluation to support aspects of the brainstorming activity, before finishing the day with afternoon tea and farewelling everyone and flying back to Perth.

Bunbury Trip

On Wednesday 20th August, NT Program Officer made the long trip over from Adelaide to accompany Oniké on a day trip to the states south-west region to visit the SWAMS Tackling Indigenous Smoking team. It was a drizzly morning down in Bunbury to welcome NBPUs arrival, while the team were kindly waiting to get stuck into the TIS training facilitated by Onike. The day moved swiftly as best practice was shared and opportunity for the TIS team to workshop skills was encouraged. The visit fostered enriching discussions between the two teams in a two-way learning fashion. Tommy added a fresh perspective to the dialogue, as the newest member of NBPU TIS, observing the training delivered for his own professional development.

Tommy mentioned “I really enjoyed the opportunity to meet and new TIS team and see a different part of this country. It was great to see Onike deliver her training and learn from her. I look forward to taking the skills I learnt from this trip to support the TIS teams in the NT.”
