On Thursday, 22nd May, Maxine and I from the NBPU TIS joined the TIS team from Bega Garnbirringu Health Service in Kalgoorlie, WA, for a one day training session.
I had the opportunity to facilitate the training for the day, covering all elements of the Tackling Indigenous Smoking program. It was great to meet with Marriezabeth (TIS Coordinator), along with Amber, Roberta and Zharayahan enthusiastic team who were eager to learn and get stuck into the day’s program.
We kicked off with an environmental scan that explored the team’s current successes, challenges and the areas they wanted to learn more about. From there, I provided an update on NBPU TIS and walked through some important aspects of the program, including the TISRIC website, the National Workshop and the impacts of smoking and vaping.
Throughout the day the team openly shared their insights, ideas and some of the frustrations they face. We had thoughtful discussions on how to improve program implementation and extend their reach within the community. Their commitment to their community and their passion for promoting smoke free living truly stood out.
We covered local trends, explored different calls to action and discussed the broader impacts of smoking and vaping. We wrapped up the day with a session on monitoring and evaluation. I also ran a few interactive activities designed to encourage collaboration and creative thinking. Maxine added great value by sharing her knowledge and experience in the TIS space.
Overall it was a really successful training day. The Bega team walked away with new tools and supports to help strengthen their TIS program delivery, including skills in public speaking, community engagement, partnership development and outcome measurement.
A huge thank you to Bega Garnbirringu for hosting us and for the incredible work you continue to do for your community every single day.
