Mobile apps can be a valuable tool in smoking and vaping cessation. They provide behavioural support, motivation, and education and can significantly improve quit rates, especially if used with other cessation supports like Nicotine Replacement Therapy (NRT) and/or behavioural counselling. Research shows that people who use smoking cessation apps are 67% more likely to remain smoke-free at six months compared to those receiving standard cessation support alone (e.g. NRT plus behavioural counselling). A recent study suggests that using a smoking cessation app also increases the use of stop smoking medicines like NRT.
Promoting apps that can support people in their quit journey is an important part of the TIS Program. Two ‘Made in Australia’ apps to be aware of are:
My QuitBuddy is an Australian government-supported app, which provides support to people at any stage of quitting smoking or vaping. It offers:
Craving management – distractions and coping strategies
Planning tools and progress tracking – visual reinforcement of achievements (including money saved)
Educational resources – information on the health impacts of smoking and vaping
A recent upgrade has expanded My QuitBuddy’s features. It now includes improved quit plans, gamification features, and an online forum. Tailored content has also been developed to support Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people who are quitting.

Pave is a new vaping cessation tool supported by Cancer Institute NSW and the NSW Government, developed in consultation with young people (aged 14-25 years). Launched in February 2025, the app has been tested at each stage of development by a panel of young people so that it is suitable for its intended audience. The app offers:
Personalized quit strategies – tailored advice and guidance
Craving management – distraction tools and activities
Planning/goal-setting and progress tracking (including money saved)
Daily check-ins – encouraging habit formation and self-reflection
