NBPU Tackling Indigenous Smoking at the PHAA National Conference
Leadership and collaboration to connect a divided world was the powerful theme of this year’s Public Health Association of Australia (PHAA) National Conference – Australia’s peak gathering for public health professionals, researchers, and advocates.
NBPU Tackling Indigenous Smoking was proud to be a sponsor and was represented by Kerindy Clarke, National Workforce Development Advisor, Dr Penney Upton and Trisha who held a stand at the conference to showcase our work alongside our consortium.
The conference brought together over 100 people groups, with a strong focus on Indigenous health and community-led solutions. Delegates engaged with leading voices including Professor Tom Calma AO and Dr Raglan Maddox, whose work continues to shape national tobacco control and health equity efforts.
Professor Calma delivered a plenary on “Indigenous Voices in Shaping Our Future”, sharing his vision of how Indigenous and non-Indigenous voices can unite for an equitable future.
For NBPU TIS, being part of these conversations highlighted the importance of:
Workforce development to strengthen Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander leadership in public health.
Evidence-based advocacy that informs national policy priorities, from closing the gap in Indigenous youth health to reducing tobacco-related harm.
Collaboration across sectors to support the health and wellbeing of all Australians.
As the PHAA continues to lead the national conversation on preventive health and health equity, NBPU TIS is proud to walk alongside its members and partners. We remain committed to ensuring Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander voices are central to shaping workforce strategies, health policy, and tobacco control efforts into the future.
