Parliament also gave the

Commonwealth Government the power

to make financial grants to the States.

The Constitution set up the States.

It says that if State law isn’t consistent

with federal law, the federal law would

sit on top of it.

It also allowed for new states to be

created.

No new States have been created since federation. The NT is hoping to become a State, but the

Constitution says it needs a majority of votes in favor from the people of the Territory to change.
