Two Way Governance: Presentation 9
The structure of the
Australian Parliament
The Australian Parliament is divided
into two Houses: the House of
Representatives and the Senate.
The House of Representatives has 150
members representing their electorates.
The senate has 76 members – 12 from
each State and two each from the NT
and the Australian Capital Territory.
Every three years, all the people of
Australia (constituents or voters) elect a
representative for their electorate – the
area where they live – as part of
deciding who will take government after
the election.
They also vote for the State’s senators
to represent the whole of the State
or Territory.
