All organisations need a legal basis for
their business – that is, they must be
incorporated. There are three Acts for
incorporation:
• the Associations (NT) Act 2007
• the Corporations (Aboriginal and
Torres Strait Islander) Act 2006; or
• the Corporations Act 2001
The Associations (NT) Act is mainly for
the Northern Territory’s not for profit
non-Government organisations
(NGOs), like sporting clubs and other
community organisations.
Some Aboriginal organisations in the
NT incorporate under this Act and it
gives them the legal status to apply for
and manage government funding.
