Abstract: Remote settlements face many challenges in striving to achieve a sustainable local economy. The aim of this paper is to identify key barriers that many remote communities face in adopting tourism as a strategy for achieving long-term economic sustainability. A case study approach was adopted based on Cooktown, a remote settlement in north eastern Australia. Data was collected from secondary sources and interviews with key stakeholders in the town's tourism industry.
