Abstract: The AUSSAT domestic satellite system creates possibilities for introducing or improving radio, television and telecommunications services in remote areas. Conceptually this satellite system has the potential to meet all the communication needs of isolated communities and, particularly, Aboriginal communities in remote Australia. Unfortunately, the satellite system's ability to meet these expectations is constrained by our capacity, and to some extent our will, to make use of it. The AUSSAT system is a marvellous piece of technology designed primarily for television broadcasting. It is prohibitively expensive, in terms of ground technology, to use it for almost any other purpose.
